Dr. Simone Andrews
Dr. Simone Andrews is a New York State-Licensed Psychologist experienced in treating a wide range of ages from childhood to late adulthood. Dr. Andrews received her Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology from New York University. She received a Master of Arts in Developmental Psychology at Teacher’s College Columbia University and completed her Doctorate in Child and School Psychology at New York University.
While pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Andrews worked with children and adolescents within the foster care setting administering psychological assessments, providing therapy to foster children, parent trainings and parent consultations. Exposure to work in foster care helped build experience in trauma focused treatment informed by cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic interventions. Separation and reunification experiences within foster care inspired a special interest in supporting clients through transitions in their lives, whether due to crisis, stage of life-based transitions or immigration.
The bridge from the child world of treatment to the adult world was realized during her year of doctoral training at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, where Dr. Andrews began working directly with adults within the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) program. The DBT adherent program was inclusive of DBT skills group, DBT individual treatment, phone coaching and consultation team. Dr. Andrews was inspired by the treatment and shortly after receiving her doctorate became intensively trained in DBT. She brought this training and experience to South Beach Psychiatric Center, where she developed a DBT adherent program for an adult outpatient program. Throughout the course of developing the program, she supervised staff, psychology externs in DBT and helped facilitate trainings in DBT for front-line staff within the inpatient units at South Beach Psychiatric Center.
Dr. Andrews utilizes an integrative approach to treatment. Drawing from her background in work with children, adolescents and families, she utilizes a strength-based approach to treatment influenced by an understanding of age specific milestones, mindfulness-based practices, attachment relations, and evidence-based interventions (CBT, DBT). She believes working collaboratively with clients towards identified goals helps to reinforce inherent strengths crystallized through the therapeutic process.
